I began my full-time college career in the Fall of 2012, when I enrolled in the Fashion Design and Merchandising Bachelorette Program at The International Academy of Design and Technology, located in Sacramento, California. Years prior, I had attended a few semesters of college courses at Modesto Junior College, when I was a young lady, fresh out of high-school. Back then, I had no idea what I wanted to focus my studies on. At MJC, my listed major was Veterinary Science, yet I found myself loathing Math and Science courses. I soon found myself dropping what wasn't General Education, and adding several Art Classes instead. I recall, my guidance counselor called me into his office one afternoon, asking if I would like to change my major to Art. I was, after all, getting all A's in these classes, and not working at all towards completing required Veterinary Science courses. However, at the time I couldn't imagine any interesting career as an Art Major. When I expressed this to my guidance counselor, he replied, "I am an Art Major!" I am no fine artist, and becoming an Art Teacher, or a Junior College Guidance Counselor, did not sound very appealing. I soon dropped out of junior college, and began to work full-time instead. In the year 2011, at the age of 29, I unexpectedly lost my job at the Credit Union I had been working at for the past 9 years. Around the same time, I was gifted a brand new sewing machine, along with Sewing Lessons, from my Step-Mother, Kathy. As I began to learn sewing techniques and how to read a commercial patterns, I fell in love with creating clothing. I wanted to learn more and more. I also found that sewing was an unexpected creative arts outlet that satisfied and challenged my artistic abilities. I had temporary employment with a construction company, and decided, maybe I should go back to school to start a career in a field that I actually would enjoy. I thought to myself, "Could there be such a thing as 'Sewing College'?" I Googled 'Sewing College', and (silly me!) Fashion Design popped up! This was the first time I ever thought of a career in Fashion. After researching Fashion Design programs available in the Northern California Area (there isn't many), I decided to attend IADT, in Sacramento. I attended this school full-time, taking an accelerated pace of courses, for the next three years. In May 2015, I graduated college with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Fashion Design and Merchandising. I was also honored as Class of 2015 Salutatorian, earning the second highest GPA of my graduating class, a 3.95 GPA. In 2015, I was the first person in my family to earn a Bachelors Degree. During the three years I attended college full-time, I learned more than I could have imagined regarding Sewing Construction, Pattern Making, Fashion Research, Trend Forecasting, Apparel Manufacturing, Global Sourcing, Marketing, Visual Merchandising, Fashion Illustration, starting my own business, creating my first clothing line, and more! The professors I learned from where truly amazing, and either were, or had been professionals in one of these fields. As a student, I took many photos on campus, as I worked on, and completed my assigned projects. Recently, I was looking though the photos that I had taken during this time, and I wanted to share some of my favorite photos with you, my dear reader! I hope that you will enjoy visualizing the life of a fashion design student by viewing the following photos! I hope you enjoyed this photo collection glimpse into my daily life attending college as a fashion design student! Tell me which photo or photos you enjoyed the most by sending me a comment! Britex Fabrics, located at 146 Geary Street in San Francisco's famous Union Square, is a historic retail fabric store, that has been family owned and operated by Martin Spector and Family, since 1952. Recently, Britex Fabrics has been declared A Legacy Business, by The Non-Profit San Francisco Heritage, in 2016. On March 18th, 2017, my dear husband, and fellow creator, Javier Rangel, and myself, traveled from Hayward, California, to visit this iconic retail store. Javi and I had the special privilege of attending the FREE "Four Floors of Fabulous Britex Fabrics" Store Tour that is offered each Saturday. However, do to the popularity of the tour, and limited spacing, tickets are required to attend this weekly tour. You can reserve your tour tickets through Eventbrite, by clicking this link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/four-floors-of-fabulous-britex-fabrics-free-store-tours-tickets-23841887728?aff=eac2
Deena, was our tour guide for this trip, and I loved how informative she was about each textile, as well as her passion for fabric! Deena explained that Britex is truly a unique fabric store, because each fabric in stock is hand-selected, personally by the store's buyer. Many of the fabrics sold at Britex are truly unique and one of a kind. The fabric selection also can be limited in quantity, so Deena advises, "If you see it, and love it, buy it now, because once it's gone, it's gone!" Taking our tour group, first to the back of the store, Deena pulled out some exquisite French Lace! The French Lace is stunning, and narrow in width. Deena explained that authentic French Lace, can be hard to find, and expensive, ranging up to $125 per yard! Deena pulled out a beautiful Silk Tulle, that I had never seen before. The Silk Tulle was passed around so everyone could feel its soft, yet sturdy texture. Britex carries Silk Tulle in stock regularly in basic colors, such as Black and Cream. What a rare delight! In addition to the beautiful French Lace, Wool Knits and Brocade fabric can also be found on the First Floor. Deena explained that Wool Knits do not wiggle the way other knit fabric might, it is also very soft. Britex Fabric also carries a Cashmere Mink blended fabric! Next, the tour group moved onto the beautiful rows of Solid Silks (there is an entire wall dedicated to Solid Silk!). Deena pulled out beautiful Crepe Back Satin, that can be utilized showing either side, and then she directed our attention to the wall full of Bridal Satin! Some of the Bridal fabrics found on this wall are imported straight from Italy! Deena gave the helpful hint, that Silk can be hand washed with shampoo and then hung to dry. Also on the first floor, are beautiful Silk Charmeuse and Chiffon, many that feature textile digital prints, that were made in Italy. I particularly loved seeing the Designer Couture Fabric designed by G. Rositani of Dolce and Gabbana (which can be purchased for $125 per yard), and the exquisite fabric by Gucci! When examining the Designer Couture Fabric, you can really see the quality of not only the fabric itself, but the quality of the print as well! Deena says, "These fabrics sell quickly!" Another beautiful textile found on the First Floor! Once on the second floor, the tour group immediately arrived in the Home Decor, or Furnishings Department. Deena explained how the textiles are organized, and then pulled out her favorite woven Turkish Upholstery Fabrics that are not only stunningly beautiful, but thick, soft, and luxurious. Deena pointed out that many upholstery fabrics are backed with a Poly-Blend for stability. Also on the second floor, are a wide variety of printed textiles, including the world famous Liberty of London Fabric. These gorgeous fabrics are made using both traditional printing techniques as well as digital Italian printing, and are often inspired by nature, architecture, and heritage. Deena also pointed out some magnificent Japanese Indigo, which is rare and difficult to obtain. Japanese Indigo is made with a unique layer waxing printing technique. Another rare find, stocked on the second floor, are Authentic Swiss Eyelet Fabrics. Deena explained that many European Fabric factories have been closing in recent times, limiting the amount of fabrics produced. In addition to the printed Cotton, a wide variety of many other fabrics can be found on the second floor of Britex Fabrics, including (but not limited to); digitally printed Linen, printed Knits, Poly/Nylon Lace, Velvets, Flannels, Solid Knits, Sequin Fabric, Poly Satin, Poly Crepe Back Satin, Taffeta, Swimsuit Nylon, Oil Cloth, Laminate Cloth, Faux Leathers, Denim, and Cotton Velvet! Wow!
Next, the tour group was shown superbly made lace, rich in artistry and detail! Check out this Pink French Knot Lace Edging that took all of our breaths away! I also learned that there are several types of Lace, including Alençon Lace, as well as Chantilly Lace. Interestingly, both Alençon Lace, as well as Chantilly Lace are named after the French Cities in which the techniques originated from. Chantilly Lace Making dates back to the 17th Century! Other notions located on the third floor, include every shade of zipper you could possible imagine, interesting elastic made in unique colors and various prints, as well as feather trims, floral accessories, and Silk Thread!
On the shelf housing the Leather Goods, there are also many Specialty Skins, such as Snake, and Eel! Javi and I really enjoyed attending this tour, in which we gained so much valuable information, not only of the store layout and merchandise, but also of the fascinating history and stories behind the textiles themselves! I hope you enjoyed my trip to Britex Fabrics as much as myself and Javi surely did! If you are in the San Francisco area, stop by this amazing store! You will not be disappointed! You can also check out Britex Fabric's Website, www.britexfabrics.com, to stay up to date on store news, as well as classes offered! Thank you for reading my Blog! Ta Ta... for now! Related Links:
Today my Husband, Javier, and I visited The Lacis Museum of Lace and Textiles located at 2982 Adeline Street in Berkeley, California. The Museum and Museum Shop are open Monday thru Saturday from 12pm until 6pm, and is a short walk from the Ashby BART Train Station. Javier and I had never visited this location before, and we were both instantly impressed with the large retail store filled with abundant supplies for lace making, embroidery, and many other creative projects, as well as the vast historical artifacts preserved and on display. The Lacis Museum of Lace and Textiles was established in 2004, “to share and sustain the extensive collection of Kaethe and Jules Kilot, consisting of lace, textiles, costume, a related library, and the tools of the textile arts” (from the brochure Lacis Museum of Lace and Textiles). The retail store was founded in 1965. Take a look at just a few of the lovely displays of Historic Lace, Lace Parasols, and Lace Art that are currently on display... The Lacis Museum of Lace and Textiles has a collection that represents "40 years of dedication to the preservation of the finest of human handiwork" including "thousands of specimens from pre-Columbian Peru... the 17th and 18th Century European Courts, and examples of machine age exemplifying the 19th Century Industrial Revolution" (excerpt in quotations from the brochure Lacis Museum of Lace and Textiles). Here a few photos I took of some of the amazing collection pieces of Historical Lace Collars on display, as well as examples of Historical Black Lace Work: In addition to the beautiful Historical Lace Artifacts on display, Lacis Museum of Lace and Textiles offers rows and rows of Embroidery Floss and Threads of all colors, and fiber content, available for purchase. Recently, over the past few years, I myself started to practice Hand-Embroidery Techniques and Designs, and I immediately fell in love with the abundant Embroidery Supplies for sale here! I highly recommend Lacis Museum of Lace and Textiles for all of your Embroidery needs! Lacis Museum of Lace and Textiles also offers beautiful Bridal Veils and supplies to create your own unique Bridal Accessories! Have you ever made your own hat? Look no further for Hat Making Supplies such as Hat Frames for all the various hat styles you can possibly think of! Lacis Museum of Lace and Textiles also has an extensive collection of Historical Costume Patterns... As well as Hoop Skirts, and Petticoats of all shapes and sizes! I was also very impressed by the extensive assortment of Corset Making Supplies, such as Corset Busks, Grommets, and Boning! Another gem I was pleased to find here, is a plentiful library "focusing on lace, textiles, and costumes, including over 12,000 items of books, patterns, articles, and other ephemera" (excerpt in quotations from the brochure Lacis Museum of Lace and Textiles). I also enjoyed finding vintage inspired notions such as Ring Finger Pin Cushions, Spool Knaves, as well as ornate scissors, and scissor holders. Lacis Museum of Lace and Textiles also carries a wide range of needle-working tools for knitting and crochet. Check out this delightful Bobbin Lace art, titled "San Francisco". This piece was handmade in the 1970's by the members of The Northern California Lace Guild, and donated to the Lacis Museum of Lace and Textiles. I hope you enjoyed reading about my visit to The Lacis Museum of Lace and Textiles in Berkeley, California! Check out their web-site, www.lacismuseum.org, for more information, or to sign up to the "Friends of the Museum" bi-weekly newsletter. Lacis Museum of Lace and Textiles also offers Lace Making Classes. Admission is currently free of charge. I hope that you have a Fantastic Day! Until next time, dear Readers! Related Links:
I have been shopping at many second hand stores, and vintage boutiques for as long as I can remember. When I was a small child, or perhaps even an infant, my Mother and I would visit local thrift shops to find great quality clothing at discount prices. As I grew into adolescence, my love for "thrifting" only increased. I recall a trip to my Grandparent's hometown of Laredo, Texas, where when asked where I would like to go, I replied, "The local Thrift Shops!" My older aunts were surprised that I was perfectly content purchasing a few second-hand blouses and cassettes, when most teenagers my age were seeking name brand garments at the local mall. My Step-Mother, Kathy, also shares my love of thrift store shopping. Kathy, has an eye for designer handbags, shoes, and clothing, and can often find amazing designer labels for insanely low prices. When I was about 16 years old, my parents, my sister, and I, were invited to a formal event in San Francisco. It was the winter season, and my Step-Mother suggested we purchase a fancy coat to go along with my formal gown. The three of us, My Step-Mother, sister, and I, visited a few local second-hand boutiques, before finding a lovely black coat, that appeared to be genuine Fur. Due to the price and feel of the garment, my Step-Mom was pretty certain it was indeed real Fur. I kept this coat, hanging in my closet, along side all of the other coats I have accumulated over the years, but honestly, never had a reason to wear it again. Wearing real Fur can be controversial, and I have not attended any high end, luxurious parties or events. The coat has sat in my closet, in a garment bag, all of these years... While attending Fashion Design College, I took the course, "Textiles for Fashion". I really enjoyed learning about the different types of textiles available, and the proper ways to use different textiles in various fashion projects. In addition, we were taught how to identify the fiber content in fabric! The Burn Test Method... One such method of identifying fabric fibers, is called The Burn Test (or Flame Test). To use this method, cut a fiber or thread from the garment in question. You will want to use tweezers to secure the fiber. Once you have the fiber held firmly with the tweezers, simply hold a flame, from a lighter, to the fiber. Depending on the type of fiber you are holding, you will notice a difference in the way the fiber burns and the way the fiber smells while burning. These tell-tale signs will help you to identify what type of fiber you may have. Protein Fibers: Protein Fibers are fibers that are created using natural animal sources. These fibers include, but are not limited to, Wool, Silk, Mohair, Cashmere, or Angora. According to the web-site, TextileSchool.com, "In general, protein fibers are fibers of moderate strength, resiliency, and elasticity. They have excellent moisture absorbency and transport characteristics. They do not build up static charge." When using The Burn Test, if the fiber burns slowly, and smells of burnt hair, it is a Protein Fiber! Cellulose Fibers: Cellulose Fibers are fibers that are created using plant based material. These fibers include, Cotton, Linen (made from Flax), Rayon (made from wood pulp), Hemp, or Bamboo (just to name a few). These fabrics are then used to create a wide range of fabrics, with a wide variety of usage. When using The Burn Test Method, if the fiber ignites quickly and smells of burnt paper or leaves, it is a Cellulose Fiber! Synthetic Fibers: Besides, Protein and Cellulose Fibers, a third type of fiber is also readily available and widely used. Developed in the late 1800's, Synthetic Fibers are man-made, artificial fibers. Interestingly, some such fibers may be made using wood, but due to the manufacturing process, they are considered "Synthetic". Synthetic Fibers include Polyester, Nylon, Spandex, and Kevlar. The list of Synthetic Fibers continues to grow, as new methods and combinations of materials are developed constantly. Benefits of using Synthetic Fibers include its resistance to being eaten by bugs such as moths, which do consume Cellulose Fibers, or the absence of fungus and molds that can sometimes attack natural fibers. Synthetic Fibers also last many years if cared for properly. However, the durability of Synthetic Fibers cause these fibers to be non-biodegradable, which is a huge factor in environmental waste that is such a concern today. I own several Polyester blouses made in the 1960's and 1970's, that aside from a few seams being mended over the years, they are still in perfect condition to this day! When using The Burn Test, you will find that a Synthetic Fiber shrinks away from the flame and smells of burnt plastic! Here is a more detailed chart of common Burn Test results: I found that learning about The Burn Test Method of identifying fabric was very interesting and easy! While learning of this method in my college class, I decided to bring my Vintage Fur Coat, to test the fiber with my professor. I cut a small strand of fiber from the coat, and collar, and burned the fibers. The fibers immediately smelled of burnt hair, which we were then able to conclude that the coat was authentic animal fur! If you ever question the fiber content of your garment, particularly vintage finds, that may not have a fiber content label, try The Burn Test Method to verify what the garment is made out of. By knowing the fiber content, you can better care for the garment, and perhaps preserve it for many years to come! Thank you, for reading my blog! I hope that you have a fantastic day! Related Links:
Recently, I started an additional side gig, as an Actress with the Murder Mystery Company, San Jose Troupe. (Currently, I am working three jobs: Fashion Designer for my own label, a Tailor Assistant & Apprentice with Oxford Way Tailoring & Men's Clothing, in Oakland, and now an actress... yes, I am always on the go, and rarely have a break from being so busy). Starting a job as an actress, where I could play several different roles, I am required to start building up a Make-Up Kit for my costume preparation, and performances. I am no Make-Up Artist. Although I am very much into fashion, Make-Up is something I know little about. Like many women, I do wear Make-Up, but little more than foundation and eye liner, purchased from the local drug store, on most days. When growing up, my Mom was never much into Make-Up. She would wear mascara, and maybe lip stick, but that was all. She never taught me how to apply Make-Up, so I only dabbled in foundation to help cover my acne. Back then, Oil-Free Make-Up wasn't common place, and I found myself breaking out even more! During my junior year of high school, I discovered eye shadow. I went alittle crazy with my application, thinking it was very artsy to blend two colors that would match my outfit. My Dad hated it, and eventually restricted my eye shadow use all together. As I grew into womanhood, I didn't wear any Make-Up at all, finding my face had a clearer complection, and guys seemed to dig the "natural beauty" look. But as I grew into my late 20's and then 30's, I began to feel that a light application of foundation definitely helped my appearance, by evening the color of my skin tone. Now, as I continually prepare for fashion shows, I wish I knew more about Make-Up, and even hair styling, since often times these services are not extended to designers for events. On some occasions, such as photo shoots, models may have to style their own hair and Make-Up. I find myself wishing I could assist more in this area. And, now... I will be creating various personas through Make-Up and Costume as a Murder Mystery Company Actress! My first role for the Murder Mystery Company, was playing a character by the name of Amanda Lay in the Crime and Punishment production. This particular script is not based on the classic novel, Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky (great book by the way), but is a completely different twisted tale, set in a 1920's Speakeasy Lounge. The character, Amanda Lay, is a seductive jazz singer. To create an unforgettable Amanda Lay, I first consulted tutorials on trusty 'ol YouTube. I learned that the characteristics of 1920's Make-Up include: minimal brow arch, sad round eyes, exaggerated red Cupid's Bow lips, porcelain matte skin, and red blush. Next, I visited the web-site of Modesto Native Make-Up Artist, Paula Serrano. Mrs. Serrano and I met several years ago through her friend, who happens to be my sister, Desiree. We collaborated previously to create a Parrot Costume look for a mutual client: I designed and created the costume, while Mrs. Serrano created the Make Up Look, and provided the Make-Up Artistry services. To see my Parrot Costume, from concept to creation, click HERE. Mrs. Serrano is not only a local MUA, but also has created her own Make-Up brand, called Paula Serrano Make-Up. Her web-site, www.paulaserranomakeup.com, offers beautiful shades of Lip Sticks, Lip Lacquer, Lip Gloss, Eye Shadow, Highlighting Sugars, and Contour Powders. I placed my Make-Up order, but I realized it might not arrive in time for my first show. Since I was anxious to practice my 1920's look before my performance, to guarantee it would look excellent on show night, I made a run to my local Sally Beauty Supply, and purchased a few items. I figured if I had any issues completing the look, I would have time to get it just right. I also began to look up YouTube tutorials, as well as pictures on Pinterest, illustrating Long Hair Styles for the 1920's woman. Most people, myself included, envision short flapper hairstyles with lots of finger waves when imagining the 1920's woman. However, at present, my hair is super long. Surly, many women also had long hair styles in the 1920's, didn't they? I found it difficult to style my own hair by myself, so I breaded my hair and coiled it into a loose bun, and than accessorized the look with a darling feather headband that my friend, Ms. Angela Neves, had made. As I began to apply my make up, listening to Fergie's "A Little Party Never Killed Nobody" from the Great Gatsby (2013) Soundtrack, my face began to transform into one of that from a different era... I used my own mascara, foundation, and an eyebrow pencil that I found in an old cigar box, which I currently use as my personal Make-Up Kit. I also purchased a set of non-expensive Make-Up Brushes from Target. Soon, my Paula Serrano Make-Up arrived! Based on the information I learned from the YouTube tutorial above, I ordered her Madre Matte Liquid Lipstick, Doe Eyes Eyeshadow, and Leather and Lace Eyeshadow. Here is the same 1920's inspired look, but this time using the Make-Up I had ordered from Paula Serrano Make-Up: In addition to mastering 1920's Make-Up techniques, I also had a script to memorize, and 1920's slang to familiarize myself with in preparation for my performance as Amanda Lay. I read my lines over and over until I had them seared into my memory. I also had to practice my singing, since my role includes the singing performance of two songs...after all, "Amanda" is a Jazz Singer... did I mention that I am not that great of a singer? Now, take a moment to enjoy this song straight from 1928, by Helen Kane! I've also included a brief list of 1920's Slang for your enjoyment! Before long, the day of my first performance arrived! I fixed up my hair and Make-Up earlier that afternoon, since I wanted to take my time applying my Make-Up, and I was still unsure of what type of preshow set-up I would be required to assist in once myself and a fellow actor arrived on location at the Private Party we would be performing at. I then made my way to the Murder Mystery Company Headquarters in San Jose, to meet up with my workmate, and to pick up my costume! Now, off to the Murder Mystery Show! I hope you enjoyed my experience re-creating a 1920's look, with Make-up, for my Murder Mystery performance! Hello Readers! On Wednesday, July 27th 2016, I participated in a truly wonderful artisan festival, called RAW San Francisco presents: REVEAL, which was held at 1015 Folsom in San Francisco! I hope you were able to come out and attend this event in person, as it was an unforgettable night filled with many talented individuals displaying and selling their artwork, as well as amazing performances by performance artists, dancers, and musicians. If you missed the show, or were out of the area, I wanted to provide you a look as to what RAW is, and give you all the details of how the event unfolded! Sit back, relax, and enjoy my experience being featured in the San Francisco RAW Showcase! Running my own design studio, in addition to working at a day-time job, and having an active family life, I have learned to keep my obligations reasonable, by knowing my own limitations on project resources and time. Currently, I have decided to focus my talents on only one Ready-To-Wear Collection per year, which allows me to make quality pieces that are cohesive, and then spend the additional needed time on preparing for and attending events, updating my web-site, collaborating with models for photo sessions, and preparing marketing materials for the promotion of my brand. It is all so much work in addition to trend forecasting, designing, and constructing clothing! I am thankful that my college education has prepared me for so many of these essential Fashion Design Business tasks! You may recall a blog article that I posted last Fall, in which I gave a behind the scenes look at the first two fashion shows that I participated in since graduating college: The Designer's Unleashed Fashion Show in May of 2015, and the First Annual Soul Incredible Unity Fashion Festive held in August of 2015. Click HERE to read the full article. While participating in these fashion shows, I gained experience and networking opportunities that allowed me to be selected as a featured designer during the 2nd Annual Oakland Fashion Week 2016 (Click HERE to read my blog article(s) covering Oakland Fashion Week), and I was also invited to showcase my collection during the 2nd Annual Soul Incredible Unity Fashion Festive, this time held in May of 2016. My participation in Oakland Fashion Week gave me exposure within the Bay Area Fashion Community: I was featured on KTVU Channel 2 News for the filming of their segment on Oakland Fashion Week, I was invited to a filming of El Show De Pepe for a studio interview about my collection, and I was asked by Joshley's Modeling School if one of their models, Deisy Salas, who was selected as El Aguila Magazine's Miss. June 2016, could wear three of my garments during her photo shoot with El Aguila Magazine! Then in June, I was contacted by Sarah Reake, of RAW, to participate in the RAW San Francisco Showcase, as a featured RAW Artist in the Fashion Design Category! (Check out my experiences in the media by clicking HERE) RAW! As you can see, the more events that I am a part of, the more opportunity I have received to participate in even more events. It has really been exciting, not only to be recognized for my ability to create clothing, but to also receive such positive feedback regarding my designs. When I had my first meeting by telephone, with Sarah Reake from RAW, I had never heard of the event previously. Sarah is a talent scout with RAW, and had came across my Facebook Business page when researching Bay Area talent. She was impressed with my designs, craftsmanship, and branding. Sarah explained to me that RAW was a unique network that brings local artisans together across the globe. RAW is in its seventh year of operation, hosting four showcases per year in cities across the US, UK, Australia, and Canada. Most of the events feature 30-40 artists, with artists displaying and selling their work at their own vendor booth space. The event features full stage productions, including showcasing Hair and Make-Up Artists, as well as a runway fashion show! So far, Sarah said that RAW has hosted many San Francisco shows with the attendance of well over 900 people! After speaking with Sarah about all of the RAW network and event details, I decided that this would be a great event to be a part of, and I signed up immediately! Part of the sign-up process included creating a RAW Artist Profile, getting together my RAW Team (Models, Hair Stylist, and Make-Up Artist), and selling 20 tickets to my friends, family, and clients. Check out my RAW Artist Profile here. Meet my RAW Team! Here is a brief introduction to each member of my RAW Team! But first...let me say, that working with these amazing woman truly enhanced my experience being a featured designer at this event! I highly recommend working with these ladies to anyone, and I look forward to working with them all again in the future. Here is a highlight of some of their experience, inspiration, and where you can contact them if you would like to work or collaborate with amazing MUA, Hair Stylists, and Models! Make Up Artist: Biridiana Rodriguez Instagram: www.instagram.com/beautybybiridiana (@beautybybiridiana) Email: makeupbybiridiana@yahoo.com or beautybybiri@gmail.com Mrs. Biridiana Rodriguez is a Make-Up Artist who lives in Arizona, but is originally a California Native. When I began seeking a Hair and Make-Up Artist who might be interested in working with me for this event, a dear family friend of mine, Mrs. June Caloroso immediately suggested that I get in touch with her close friend, Mrs. Rodriguez. Mrs. Caloroso told me that Mrs. Rodriguez is a Make-Up Artist for Dior Cosmetics, and would be visiting the Bay Area during the week of the event. I had met Mrs. Rodriguez at the Caloroso Wedding last year, but I did not know her very well. I was delighted when we spoke, that she said she would be very interested in participating in this event! I was also impressed that she would consider being a part of this event, since she would be traveling from Arizona to California while on vacation! Mrs. Rodriguez explained her passion of Make-Up Artistry to me, as something she has loved all of her life, "as far back as I can remember" she had said. So I was quite surprised when she told me that initially she had sought out a career in Culinary Arts, and had went to college to become a Pastry Chef! Because of her career as a Pastry Chef, she found herself with little time to pursue her creativity in Make-Up Art. However, after some "soul searching", she realized that her true love was Make-Up, and that working as a Pastry Chef was lacking in her passion. It was as if the baking was a hobby, and her Make-Up was her craft, so she made a change... When Mrs. Rodriguez decided to pursue a career as a Make-Up Artist (MUA), she began working as a Freelance MUA for MAC Cosmetics. This led her to begin to develop her own MUA business, where she creates beautiful Make-Up looks for her client's Bridal, Quinceañeras, Prom, and other special occasions. Mrs. Rodriguez said that since changing careers, she just "ran with it, not looking back", and is truly happy with her career as a Make-Up Artist. In the future, Mrs. Rodriguez would love to create You Tube Tutorials that help viewers of all ages and races learn Make-Up Application Techniques, learn how to enhance their features, and thus provide confidence and the feeling of beauty that every woman desires to some degree. Personally, I love this idea, since I myself have never really learned much about Make-Up, and need an expert to teach me so many basic techniques! If you would like to contact Mrs. Biridiana Rodriguez for your upcoming occasions, you can contact her via email at: makeupbybiridiana@yahoo.com or beautybybiri@gmail.com. Also, be sure to check out her Instagram page: www.instagram.com/beautybybiridiana ! Hair Stylist: Esme Gutierrez Mrs. Esme Gutierrez and I met during Oakland Fashion Week 2016, when she styled three of my model's hair, as well as my own hair prior to our Runway walk! Mrs. Gutierrez is not only a highly skilled Hair Stylist, but a remarkably sweet and humble lady. I contacted Mrs. Gutierrez when I first began seeking a hair artist for this event. I was so pleased when she agreed to come on board as part of my RAW SF Team! Mrs. Gutierrez has a true passion for styling hair. I was amazed when she told me that her love for styling hair began when she was just seven years old! When Mrs. Gutierrez was a young girl, she would often style her doll's hair, and cut her Great Grandmother Hair! As she grew up into her teenage years, she began to study fashion. However, as her studies of fashion progressed, the more she realized that hair was what she truly loved. Mrs. Gutierrez moved to California to begin Cosmetology School for hair, and has loved every moment of it! To Mrs. Gutierrez, her dreams truly came true! Fashion Runway Model: Ebone Macon Instagram: www.instagram.com/legalegoddess Website: www.royalplugcompany.com A few months ago, I was invited to participate in the recording of a pilot episode of a Bay Area fashion television show, which was being filmed in Alameda, California. I brought two models with me, and a third model, which happened to be the lovely Ebone Macon, was also there to wear and take a few pictures in my collection pieces. That day, my husband, Javier and I took some great shots of the models just outside the studio. I loved all of the pictures we took, such as the two below, and knew I would love to work with Ebone again. We exchanged contact information, and I began to follow her work on social media. Ebone Macon, who is from Antioch, California, and has been modeling for the past six years, is not only a beautiful model for both runway and photography shoots, but is also extremely creative and artistic. Ebone is the founder of The Royal Plug Company, which she created in February of 2016. The Royal Plug Company is a network of models, entertainers, and artist, with the goal of empowering the community through public outreach, and community events. Ebone hopes to inspire change and make a real difference within the community. As I began to know Ebone better, I was not only impressed with her Royal Plug accomplishments and goals, but I also learned that Ebone is a singer, poet, artist, and she creates beautiful Waist Beads, chokers and headbands. Ebone's ambitions do not stop there! In addition to creating The Royal Plug Company and her artistic works, she has also developed the groups; The Goddesses of the Bay, in conjunction with The Goddesses of Atlanta, and The Royal League for Boys and Men. Ebone hopes to grow these groups into a modeling agency, and perhaps a modeling school for boys and girls! If you would like to learn more about The Royal Plug Company, and upcoming events, check out www.royalplugcompany.com! Fashion Runway Model: Kayli Di Vor Instagram: www.instagram.com/1kaylidivor (@1kaylidivor) Facebook Fan Page: www.facebook.com/Kayli-Di-Vor-1760788317488223 Kayli Di Vor, a fashion model from Oakland, is not only a stunning beauty, with classy confidence, but is hard working and dedicated. I first met Kayli Di Vor during one of the final model casting calls for Oakland Fashion Week 2016. While practicing her runway walk among many other young ladies, Kayli surely stood out. I recall on that particular day, I was hoping to collaborate with her in the future, as I had already chosen my models for OFW during the previous casting call, and was unable to use her as a model for that particular event. Kayli, however, was chosen by several other designers for OFW 2016. While working together during that fashion filled week, we met the host of El Show De Pepe, Pepe Gonzalez, who was impressed with Kayli, as well as with my designs! Mr. Gonzalez told me that I and Kayli had stood out to him! The both of us were invited to be guests on El Show De Pepe in May! For the filming of the episode, we car-pooled together from Oakland to Burlingame, California, across the Bay!
As I got to know Kayli, I found that she started her modeling career three years ago, and aspires to become a designer. On her free time, she sketches out intriguing designs that are unique and fashion forward. I was so happy when she agreed to work with me during the RAW San Francisco Runway event! Fashion Runway Model: Lilibeth Bustos Linares Instagram: www.instagram.com/lilithbln (@lilithbln) Email: lilithbustoslinares@gmail.com When I started putting together my RAW SF Model List, I was so pleased that Lilibeth Linares was interested in participating when I contacted her! Lilibeth is such a pleasant young lady, I absolutely adore her! Like many of the other models I have met in the Bay Area, I met Lilibeth during Oakland Fashion Week 2016. Lilibeth, who is also a photographer in addition to a model, is from Columbia. Lilibeth began to study modeling when she was 18, in Columbia, but it wasn't until recently that she began walking the runway! Lilibeth says that participating in Oakland Fashion Week was really the first modeling event she has done in the USA. Her friend, Yasmin Guerrero (another model we love), recommended that she try out for Oakland Fashion Week and attend the Model Casting Call. Lilibeth was inspired by Yasmin's confidence and willingness to help teach others modeling techniques. I found it fascinating when Lilibeth told me that in Columbia, the beauty standards are much different than here in the Bay Area. Lilibeth said that in Columbia, "Women have to have a 'perfect' body, hair, and face. But here, even when I was super nervous, I had someone that believed in me, and that broke many taboos in my mind. I started feeling more secure with the person that I am, and I learned that the concept of beauty is a combination of many things, the most important of which is that which comes from inside." Beautiful words, Lilibeth! Lilibeth's future modeling goals include participating in more runway events. I know I would love to work with her next season when my upcoming collection debuts, if her schedule permits! If you would like to contact Lilibeth regarding runway events, you can contact her through email at: lilithbustoslinares@gmail.com. Be sure to also check out her modeling and photography work on Instagram: www.instagram.com/lilithbln. Fashion Runway Model: Raashi Chugh Two days before the RAW San Francisco Reveal event, I received a message from Raashi Chugh, asking if I had any need for last minute or additional runway models. Raashi had met my Hair Stylist, Esme at an event the previous week, and was interested in RAW when she heard of it. It just so happened that my Pencil Skirt Flamingo Halter Dress from my current collection was not going to be shown in this event because the model I had originally intended to wear the dress was under 21 years old. I didn't think of it at first, but I later realized that because the event was at a night club, all models and assistants needed to be over 21 years of age. Instead of seeking a new model, the exact same size, I just decided to cut the dress from the line-up, and add a new dress for model Saucye West to wear instead. When I received the initial message from Raashi, I responded by asking her what her dress measurements are. Surprisingly, she is the exact same size as the dress that I had decided not to show! We agreed to meet in San Jose the following evening for a fitting (the day before the show!), and... the dress fit her perfect! Like a glove! Interestingly, in addition to being a model, Raashi is also an IT Technician in San Jose. I was happy to welcome Raashi to our RAW SF Team, and I filled her in on all the 'day of' details. Fashion Runway Model: Marisa Johnson Instagram: www.instagram.com/thespideylady (@thespideylady) Email: mktgmodeling@gmail.com The lovely Marisa Johnson, started her journey in Texas, then traveled to New York, and all along the East Coast, before heading to sunny California! I recall when I first met Marisa, back in April, at the Media/Designer Mixer for Oakland Fashion Week 2016. On that occasion, Marisa told me that she only recently moved to California from Texas, as a traveling Sonogram Technician, and was shocked at all the spring time rain we were having! I laughed because California has been lacking in rainy seasons for years now, and all this drought talk must seem like a myth to someone traveling into California during an unexpected spring time rain season, such as the one we had this past spring. Marisa is not only a Sonogram Technician, but is a model, a photographer, and an actress! When Marisa and I first met, we instantly connected. I was even more excited when she contacted me soon after to ask if I had any garment samples of my designs that I would be willing to loan to her while she traveled to Greece for a vacation trip and photo shoot! I thought that that this was a brilliant idea, that ended up being a WIN for the both of us! Marisa took several of my dresses and skirts as she traveled to Greece! Upon her return she shared with me some truly amazing photos! I may not be able to travel the world quite yet, but how exciting that my designs have! After seeing so many of my creations looking absolutely amazing on Marisa, I was truly overjoyed that she was able to come out and be a part of the RAW San Francisco runway show! As expected, she looked stunning in my SS2016 Collection, Parthenon High Waist Skirt, and Crepe Satin Drop Sleeve Blouse! Just take a look for yourself... Marisa is always looking to network and collaborate with others for participation in upcoming events. Be sure to visit her Website, www.MarisaJ.com, and check out her work on Social Media! Marisa is currently rehearsing for her performance in the musical, Memphis, in San Jose! Buy your tickets to her performance today at, www.tabardtheatre.org/memphis.html. Fashion Runway Model: Saucye West Website: https://www.saucyewestplusmodel.com/ Instagram: www.instagram.com/saucyewest (@saucyewest) Facebook Fan Page: www.facebook.com/SaucyeWestPlusModel Email: saucyewest@gmail.com Truly, one of my favorite things about working in the Fashion Industry is meeting such amazing, inspiring people. One such inspiring person, who I've had the privilege to meet and work with, is the beautiful model, Sauyce West. Sauyce West is a fashion model from Vallejo, who is breaking down the barriers of what society defines as beauty, and giving so many woman who do not fit into the molds of standardized, off the rack clothing, increasing confidence . Saucye had contacted me over a year ago, asking if I created any Plus Size clothing in my existing line, and if I did, she was a local fashion and runway model seeking to work with local designers. After checking out Saucye's modeling work, I was very impressed and inspired! Saucye is not only gorgeous, she loves her body, and promotes body confidence. Saucye West, who has been modeling for the last six years, said that she decided to pursue a career in modeling because she felt there is a lack of representation of plus size women in the modeling workforce, and she wants to change that. However, she finds it is rare to meet designers who are willing to create clothing for her size. When I began to gather all of my RAW SF models, I realized I had enough time before show date to create a new dress, for my Flamingos at the Parthenon Collection, that was made to Saucye's measurements. I recall back in college, one of my favorite professors, said that when asked if I could sew this, or make that, I should get in the habit of saying yes. When you say no all the time, people will stop asking. It is also a great way to gain more experience, learn new techniques, and expand my creativity. So, when Saucye inquired about walking in the RAW SF Runway Show for my collection, I didn't see why not! Saucye then sent me her measurements, and I thought up a new dress I would make for her to wear. I drafted a pattern, and then constructed a muslin mock-up for the first fitting. Saucye West wants to continue to challenge designers to add plus size garments to their collections. I love following Saucye West's work, and saved some links to share with you! Check out the recent videos and articles Saucye has been featured in: Huffington Post: "13 Women Share The Unbelievably Fatphobic Sh*t People Say To Them" "48 Plus Size Women Rocking Their Visible Belly Outlines in Flawless Fashion Photos" "Jeanette Miller and Saucye West Talk Fat Activism" You can reach Saucye West for future collaborations or events though her email, at: saucyewest@gmail.com. Also be sure to check out her web-site and social media to keep updated on all her projects! Show Day!My team and I began to arrive at 1015 Folsom in San Francisco around 2pm the day of the event. Each of my models began to have their hair and make-up styled, as we began to prepare for the runway show! The energy of my team was so upbeat and positive! As my models began to arrive, they were re-united with ladies they had worked with previously, or they were able to create new networking connections by meeting people they had not worked with as of yet. As the other featured artisans began to set up their artwork and vendor spaces throughout the venue, my team and I had a chance to walk around, meet some of the featured artists, and check out some amazing art, all before the doors of the event even opened! I too set up a small vendor space, where I displayed my Ready-To-Wear Catalog and Made to Order information. I was even able to sell my hand-crafted all natural Oils Right Now! Lip Balm! Showtime! After much work and preparation, my models were Cat Walk ready! 7pm quickly arrived, and the numerous event patrons began to come in to the venue. My models changed into cocktail dresses that they had brought to wear until the runway was scheduled to begin at 10pm. Some of my models had friends and family that joined them. My husband came to help me with my vendor booth, a buddy of his came out, as well as members of my family. It was really nice mingling and talking to people about my brand! Before we knew it, the grand finale of the event was approaching! It was time for my team of models and I to head downstairs to the Green Room to change into my collection pieces! We then lined up to walk the runway! Here are some pictures of my beautiful models wearing my Spring/ Summer 2016 Collection, "Flamingos at the Parthenon", at the RAW San Francisco presents: REVEAL Runway Show: Here are some more lovely photos, taken by Duy Ho (RAW SF Lead Photographer)! My RAW Future... I very much enjoyed my experience as a featured designer at the RAW San Francisco presents: REVEAL! As part of the RAW Network of Artisans, I have another opportunity to showcase my designs at a future RAW event, in the city, state, or country of my choice, within one year. I have not yet decided where I will be showcasing my upcoming 2017 Collection with RAW, but Canada is sure sounding like an interesting journey! Hello Friends! Thank you for reading my blog series covering Oakland Fashion Week 2016! I was so fortunate to not only attend all five days, but to also showcase my current collection on the Day 3 Event. During each day I was privileged to meet many amazing people. I am sad that OFW is over, it was such a wonderful week, and quite honestly I could get used to going out to a fashion show every single night! What a dreamy job that would be! Right about now, the professional photographers who worked during all of the fashion filled days, are editing their vast collection of photos, and are beginning to release some truly amazing shots. On the final night of OFW, my family came along with me to view the final presentation of collections. My husband, Javier Rangel, has helped me tremendously with photography and providing me with a Cannon camera to take some behind the scenes shots of the final night. Take a look at some of my favorite behind the scenes photos we were able to capture: On the final night of Oakland Fashion Week, six designers and boutiques presented captivating ensembles! The first to present an alluring array of formal gowns was boutique owner Rosa Bliss with Bliss Boutique and Bridal. Bliss Boutique and Bridal is located at 881 South 1st Street in San Jose, California. Here are a few pictures of my favorite looks: Second on the runway, was Oxford Way Tailoring, which is located at 6038 Telegraph Avenue in Oakland. I was genuinely looking forward to seeing the Men’s Wear garments presented in this collection, particularly because I know the owner of this tailor shop personally. Mr. Randy Rowden is the owner and tailor of Oxford Way, which he runs with his family. Interestingly, his daughter, Tiendres Rowden and I attended college together at the International Academy of Design and Technology in Sacramento. Although Tiendres was in the graduating class prior to mine, we had several classes together, and the two of us became friends! It was such a pleasure seeing Tiendres and her father, Randy, at Oakland Fashion Week! The Men’s Wear pieces they presented were just my style! As you most likely know, I love mixing textiles and prints! So when I saw the amazing combinations of shirts, sportcoats, ties, bow ties, and suits, I , along with all in the audience, were overcome with joy! When speaking with Mr. Rowden after the event, he mentioned to me that he was very pleased of the positive feedback he received from young men regarding the looks he presented. He told me that for a while, in the 1990’s, during the “Hip Hop Era”, as he put it, people in general began to dress more casual. Now he is seeing young people interested in dressing up again, and his business is growing more and more each day. Check out a few of my favorite looks from Oxford Way: The next designer to present was Martha Carretero. Mrs. Carretero's designs were undeniably beautiful and graceful! What most impressed me about her designs was that each formal gown and cocktail dress had an amazingly intricate hand-painted floral motif strategically placed on each garment. Each model walking down the runway held a flower that was identical to the floral design hand-painted on the dress! This styling was cleverly impactful! Take a look at some of my favorite designs: Fourth up on the runway was Raul Rosales from Sacramento. I had worked with Raul at a previous runway show, the 1st Annual Soul Incredible Unity Fashion Festive last August in Sacramento. I was very impressed with the designs that he presented last year, and was very much looking forward to seeing his new collection! Mr. Rosales is known for creating voluminous ball gowns fit for a princess! He also uses an interesting assortment of luxurious textile combinations. This collection was no exception! I immediately noticed that in some of his designs, he used a plastic textile! The plastic textile, along with the other fabrics used created a look that was not only artful but futuristic! Check out a few of my favorite pieces from his collection: After Raul Rosales, the next designer to present was James Thomas Head. I met Mr. Head at the pre-fashion week events that were held prior to OFW, such as model casting calls, and a designer mixer. Mr. Head was very friendly, outgoing, and welcoming. We became friends instantly! As I got to know Mr. Head, and the experience he has as a designer for many years, I was very much impressed! Interestingly, Mr. Head has been designing for over 20 years! He is best known for creating the iconic pants that the musician MC Hammer wore in the 1990’s! Mr. Head’s designs for MC Hammer have appeared on numerous magazines including the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine. Mr. Head also created a successful clothing brand in the 1990’s called Sag Wear. He described to me the process he went through with Sag Wear, creating his extremely unique denim wear in a factory in Texas, and then selling them in retail stores, across the US! Mr. Head is always thinking of, and then creating, very innovative, ingenious designs! Check out some of my favorite pieces that Mr. James Thomas Head presented during OFW 2016: Closing the runway show was designer Marise Oliviera, from Brazil! Her designs were feminine and stunning! I have yet to visit Brazil, but I imagine the jaw-dropping Brazilian Women would all look like this! Check out a few of my favorite looks: That concludes my journey through each day of Oakland Fashion Week 2016! Thank you again for taking the time to read my blog post series covering the entire week! I look forward to seeing you at the next runway show! Related Links:
The pieces were really colorful, and many were extremely unique! The crowd was fascinated by the array of men’s and women’s swim attire that glided across the runway! Before I recap the five featured collections, let’s take a look at the evolution of swim wear that has transformed in style dramatically over the course of the last two hundred years. A few years back I was reading the book, Hiroshima, by John Hersey. It is a somber tale detailing the events and after effects of the atomic bombing that occurred in Hiroshima, Japan on August 6th 1945. While I was reading the startling facts about atomic bomb testing that occurred during that era, I learned that the US set off many test bombs along the coast in the Pacific Ocean, including near several small islands and atolls (an atoll is a reef, or chain of islands formed of coral). One such atoll, the Bikini Atoll, was devastated by the effects of these bomb tests, resulting in the native habitats being forced to move from the area. According to recent news sites, the Marshall Islands, which is where the Bikini Atoll is located, is still brimming with nuclear contamination to this very day. During the 1940’s and 1950’s people were fascinated by the new development of atomic power. It was little understood, and highly romanticized. Louis Reard, who was a French designer of the 1940’s created a courageous two-piece swimsuit, which he called the “Bikini”, indicating that the impact of this new fashion would be explosive! European women wearing the new fashion were called “bombshells”, because of the devastating effect they had on their male companions. Although the idea of a two-piece swimsuit was not new, European women in the 1930’s were pairing halter tops with shorts; this new style, created by Reard, was crafted using minimal fabric, mimicking a bra and panties. In addition to Louis Reard, Jacques Heim also created a similar design, around that time, and called his two-piece suit “atome”. I find these facts very interesting, especially since the word Bikini is commonly used to describe a two-piece swimsuit today! We even call the sexy ladies who wear them “bombshells”! Let's take a look at the modern "Bombshells" of Oakland Fashion Week! The first collection featured at this years OFW swimwear event, Designs by Layla, was radiant! I loved all three looks, particularly the fringe detail on the second swimsuit presented. The models were so stunningly beautiful. I wish I could look as good in a Bikini as they do, but thankfully some alternatives were presented in the next collection that may be more suitable for body conscience types like myself! The next designs were created by Ujena Swimwear. Ujena Swimwear showcased a large collection of 13 exquisite pieces! I loved the mixture of two-piece swimsuits, one-piece suits, and cover ups. They were all so pretty! Don't you agree?
One of the best parts about attending all of the Oakland Fashion Week events, is having the opportunity to network with models, hair and make-up artists, photographers, event coordinators as well as fellow designers. One designer who I had the privilege of meeting during the first model casting for OFW, was Masthan Fanaka. Mr. Fanaka and I talked at length during an event mixer that we both attended a few weeks ago, and he told me about his career path, and what led him to design. Mr. Fanaka started his career in fashion as a photographer, but then became inspired to create his own swimwear line. He said at first he felt his peers did not take him seriously as a designer, but as his skill and ideas increased he began to develop a reputation for creating amazing intricate swimwear that was fashion forward, bold, and energetic. Yesterday evening, Mr. Fanaka presented both a men's swimwear line and a women's swimwear line. The pieces in his women's collection were truly special! I loved how each garment included an element of surprise. Check out some of my favorites:
Following Mr. Fanaka presentation, were garments from Jr. Esmeralda Boutique. During this event, Jr. Esmeralda Boutique showcased a wide variety of shorts and tops in a multitude of color combinations. Everyone enjoyed these looks, as I surely did! While studying fashion, I learned clothing construction techniques, as well as needlework techniques such as knitting and crocheting. Because of my knowledge of these crafts, I appreciated the next collection presented by Very Conceited. Each swimsuit was made out of exquisite knitted textiles. I absolutely adored every piece in this collection! Thank you for taking the time to read my blog article about Oakland Fashion Week: Day Four "Splash: Swim & Resort"! I know all who have helped make this event a possibility are overflowing with excitement as OFW main event, the final runway show, "VIP Exclusively Yours" will commence on Saturday May 14th 2016! I look forward to seeing you there! Related Links:
Today I am going to give you a unique look into Oakland Fashion Week’s third day event, “Sol Afrik”, with exclusive behind the scene footage! I am so fortunate and thankful for the opportunity to have presented my Spring/Summer 2016 Collection, “Flamingos at the Parthenon” last night on the runway! The energy and comradery behind the stage was unbelievable! For most of the evening, I was helping prepare my models for the runway show, as they spent hours getting their hair and makeup styled. My amazing husband, Javier Rangel, was out taking some truly fantastic photographs of the other designer’s presentations, and he captured some pretty unique shots, that I am pleased to share with you today! If you have been following this blog series of mine detailing the daily events of OFW, you will know that there are only two days left of this phenomenal annual event! Tonight, join us at Studio Fab, 2525 Telegraph Ave, Oakland, at 7pm for the “Splash: Swim & Resort” Collections, and then again tomorrow night at 150 Hegenberger Road, Oakland, at 7pm for “VIP: Exclusively Yours”! I have met many of the designers presenting at these upcoming events, and let me tell you, you do not want to miss the viewing of these collections! I cannot wait to see designer, Mastahn Fanaka’s swimwear collection tonight! From what I have seen of his previous work, his designs are Hot! Hot! Hot! As the designers, models, hair and make-up team, photographers, and event coordinators were working hard to get every detail just right, the crowd began to pour in from Telegraph Avenue, and fill the seats along the runway! As a clothing designer, it is thrilling to see the audience swarm in with excitement. I love seeing the models come in bare faced, all with such exquisite beauty even in their natural state, and then transform into a work of human art! Everyone back stage was upbeat and positive, which always creates a fantastic show! Project Royal was first to present their collection on the runway! The clothing collection was a mixture of t-shirts, sweatshirts, and shorts, all adorned with their graphically bold logo! Hip, cool, and fresh, this street wear is a must have! Click this link for a video interview with the designer of Project Royal: https://www.facebook.com/OFW-Art-Style-Magazine-615336158617013/videos The next designer collection was presented by Invisible Hero Clothing. The styles were all so unique and interesting! I really loved the fact that the designer of Invisible Hero Clothing, Charlie, described her garments as one of a kind pieces that are made from recycled clothing! Charlie's brand uses fully sustainable techniques. Those of you who know me personally know that the environment and all of its creatures are important to me, so when I see designers like Charlie, who are making a difference in the fashion industry to reduce waste, it makes me so happy! Click this link for a video interview with Charlie, the designer of Invisible Hero Clothing: https://www.facebook.com/OFW-Art-Style-Magazine-615336158617013/videos Along with my husband, my two children attended last night's event. I always enjoy taking them to the runway shows I am a part of, because they see first hand at home the design process of creating these garments, and then the final product of the garments I create on the runway! I believe that artistic events such as this, are a great influencer on young ones. Both of my children are excelling in creativity, and I am sure that Oakland Fashion Week will inspire them further. Iyska, my eight year old daughter, loved the energy of OFW Host, Sara Anders. She told me after the show that it was really neat seeing a host with so much energy and enthusiasm! Sara really got the party going! My son, Tenzing, said that he appreciated the Hair and Make Up team being introduced, and telling the audience about their experience and what it takes to provide their services for a runway show. If you have young ones, consider bringing them out to the next event! You never know what may get their minds going! I am grateful for the support of my career from my family. Even my dad and his girlfriend came out to the show! Flamingos at the Parthenon! Fourth on the line-up, was my collection: Roxanne Rodriguez's Spring/Summer 2016 Collection, "Flamingos at the Parthenon"! When I created this collection, I wanted to use elegant textiles, such as crepe satin, as well as hand beading and applique techniques. I love creating fashion, and I also love pushing my own comfort zone and creating garments that are rich in unique details. I am an old fashioned gal at heart, and I draw inspiration for my silhouettes from those of the 1940's and 1950's. However, my looks are not intended to be completely vintage inspired. I am designing for the woman of the future, and in my opinion, the future is right now! I use bright, bold textile combinations, with funky artistic details that make my customer stand out in the crowd. She is fashionable, and classy. She is modern and fresh. Lastly, Bobo Kwame, a local fashion designer, presented his "Legend Collection". I really enjoyed the variety of textiles that were used in his designs. Bobo Kwame had a wide range of Sportcoats created in beautiful textiles. He also presented women's dresses that were both flowy and light, perfect for summertime! Check out this link to see a video of the designer of Bobo Kwame: https://www.facebook.com/OFW-Art-Style-Magazine-615336158617013/videos I hope that you enjoyed my Behind the Scenes coverage of Day Three of Oakland Fashion Week 2016! This runway show featured exquisite jewelry designs by Engracia Jewelry, as well as beautiful garments from MeMe & Robin Boutique, JR. Esmeralda Fashions, Rainbow Store, and Virgin Only Boutique. First on the runway was mesmerizing jewelry designs by Engracia Jewelry. The company slogan, "Simply Elegant, Simply You" seems like an understatement! The intricate, bold, beaded designs made by Maria Rodriguez were both unique and radiating with beauty! These jewelry pieces are truly statement items that would look lovely paired with a wide variety of garments to create a one of a kind look. You can check out more designs by Engracia Jewelry by visiting their web-site at www.EngraciaJewelry.org. Here are a few of my favorite looks from the evening: MeMe & Robin Boutique were up next to strut their garments down the runway, and wow, were the pieces they presented smoking hot! I particularly loved the fact that MeMe & Robin set up a Pop Up Boutique at the runway viewing, giving patrons of the fashion show a unique opportunity to purchase the items they were seeing right then and there! Check out more of their items at http://www.memerobinboutique.com. Here are a few of my favorite pieces: Next up, Jr. Esmeralda Fashion! Fun textiles, skin tight dresses, and flowy jumpsuits were all presented in the next collection! Sara Anders, host of OFW summed it up nicely when she said, "Jr. Esmeralda offers something for everyone! Something for your sister, your auntie, your daughter, and you! Something for everyone!" Here are two of my favorite looks from Jr. Esmeralda (left photo) along with boutique owner Sonia Campos (center). And some of my favorites from Rainbow Boutique (right photo), who was next on the line up showcasing their stylish merchandise! Lastly, Virgin Only Boutique presented several beautiful garments. I particularly enjoyed the many lace dresses and jumpsuits, as well as the solid and multi color jumpsuits and dresses! These pieces are sizzling for summertime! I hope you enjoyed my re-cap of Day Two of Oakland Fashion Week, "Fashion Boulevard"! Oakland Fashion Week is truly off to a great start, with three more nights of fashion filled fun ahead! I myself am heading out to Studio Fab right now, to get my models prepared for tonight's event, where I will be showcasing my current designs!
